Turning Trash into Treasure: How I Upcycled a Lampshade from the Thrift Store

Have you ever found something cool at a thrift store and thought, “I can totally make this awesome”? Well, that’s exactly what happened to me when I spotted a beat-up lampshade with pleats gathering dust on a shelf. It looked kinda sad, but I saw its potential and decided to give it a makeover.

First things first, I needed to clean up the lampshade. It was covered in grime, but underneath all that mess was some really nice wood. So, armed with sandpaper, I got to work sanding away the dirt and revealing the natural wood underneath. It was like uncovering buried treasure!

Once the base was looking good, I wanted to spruce up the top. I love the fancy look of Liberty fabric, so I found a pretty piece with flowers on it.

What makes Liberty fabrics so special is not just their stunning designs, but also their quality. Made from the finest materials, they have a silky smooth texture that feels heavenly to the touch. And the colors! Oh, the colors are simply divine

I carefully covered the top of the lampshade with the fabric, making sure it looked nice and smooth. Here’s how I did it using fabric glue:

  1. Measure and Cut: Place your lampshade top-down on the fabric and trace around it, leaving a few inches of extra fabric around the edges. This will ensure you have enough to cover the entire top. Then, carefully cut out the fabric along the traced lines.
  2. Apply the Fabric Glue: Working in small sections, brush fabric glue onto the top of the lampshade. Make sure to cover the entire surface evenly.
  3. Attach the Fabric: Carefully place the fabric over the glued surface, smoothing out any wrinkles or bubbles as you go. Work your way around the lampshade, pressing the fabric firmly into the glue.
  4. Trim and Finish: Once the fabric is in place, trim any excess fabric around the edges.
  5. Let it Dry: Allow the lampshade to dry completely. This will ensure that the fabric adheres securely and stays in place.

I felt like something was missing so I added a fancy finishing touch, I glued on some velvet ribbon around the edges. It made the lampshade look super classy!

When I stepped back and looked at the lampshade, I couldn’t believe the difference. It went from being a sad, forgotten thing to a really cool piece of decor! I was amazed at what a little bit of work and creativity could do.

This project taught me that you don’t need to spend a ton of money to have nice things. With a little bit of imagination and effort, you can turn something old and boring into something unique and special. Plus, it’s good for the environment because you’re giving old stuff a new life instead of throwing it away.

Turning that old lampshade from the thrift store into a stylish piece of decor was so much fun. It showed me that there’s beauty in unexpected places, and with a little bit of love, you can make anything look amazing. So, next time you’re at a thrift store or rummaging through your attic, keep an eye out for hidden treasures—you never know what you might find!
